The Lakes Area Model
Railroad Association began in the early 1980s as the Alexandria
Railroad Modelers. Presently, over 25 members range in age from
6 years old to over 80 and represent about a dozen communities
in west central Minnesota.
The non-profit club
has promoted the model railroad hobby through shows, clinics and
work with the Boy Scouts in Alexandria, Glenwood and Benson. This
last winter the club also has displayed train layouts at two retirement
communities in Alexandria.
The group meets every
Monday from 7 to 10 p.m. in the lower level of the Central Square
Building in Glenwood. Meetings are open to visitors and potential
new members. The club is also open on Saturdays, 1st and 3rd of
the month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the summer months.
The meeting room railroad
display in the lower level features a 16-foot by 40-foot "HO"
gauge layout and a 9-foot by 21 foot "N" scale layout. Also featured
at our train shows the club has a 12-foot by 21-foot portable
"HO" layout, a 3-1/2 foot by 6-foot "N" scale layout and a 7-foot
by 11-foot Lego train layout which is always a big hit with the
kids. Along with the LAMRA layouts, other clubs and individuals
are invited to display their layouts and railroad items.
